Design Thinking

Judy Caraang & Dana Clarkson, Design39Campus

Love the idea of adding Design Thinking to your curriculum but wonder how to teach the process to your kiddos? Join us to see and experience a Design Thinking sprint with 3rd grade students through an integrated humanities challenge.  In this Deep Dive, you will learn how the Design Thinking Process allows students to practice content skills while growing their collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity skills. Short activities and tools for building your students’ design thinking muscles and mindsets including project ideas will be shared in the afternoon session. Be ready to jump in, learn and Design Think!

Camie Dyess and Sara Reiserer, Design39Campus

Whether you have a dedicated makery at your school or want to build and nurture creative confidence, this Deep Dive will provide you with the hands-on experience of using a makerspace. See how a makery is used as a collaborative playground for your students to invite curiosity and inspire wonder. Experience how makerspaces inspire deeper learning. After all is said and done, you’ll walk away with a blueprint to creating or enhancing your own makerspaces. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty!

Entrepreneurialism in Action

Mindy Ahrens and Billy Corcoran, Design39Campus

How might we build academic skills through engaging, rigorous projects? Classroom businesses is one way. Join us during the classroom experience to see math, literacy, and lifeskills combine through our year long cultivation of student run businesses in a 4th/5th grade team. You will hear how initial product ideas were sparked. See how learners use tools from the business world such as SCRUM boards to manage our process along the way.  Watch as groups struggle with failure and use lessons learned to move forward. In the afternoon Mindy and Billy will share the steps taken along the way as well as tips and tricks to bring this back to your setting.

Building Learner Agency

Paula Cotton & Angela Corcoran, Design39Campus

Turning over the ownership to learners deepens the learning but can be scary and challenging to manage for teachers! Come see K-1st grade learners building their agency while engaging in a community-based project, Seed the Need. Students used the design thinking process to conduct empathy for residents in a local memory care facility and are now building solutions to various needs. Not only do these students have ownership of the project outcome, they are also taking control of their academic learning by identifying what math, literacy and science knowledge they need to know in order to build their solution. See how this in action in the morning classroom sessions and how it all comes together behind the scenes in the afternoon.
