Pre-Conference Workshop Descriptions:

Tour39: Thursday, April 27th, 2017 @Design39Campus 8:00am – 2:00pm

Tour39 allows you to engage in a fully immersive regular school day with staff and students at Design39Campus. Tour39 kicks off with Principal Joe Erpelding and Learning Experience Designers (LED’s) sharing about the development of the school, instructional model, and roadmap to the future. Participants will then select Design39Campus classrooms focused on the following lesson designs:

  • Human-Centered Design Thinking
  • STEAM-Based Experiences in the Makery
  • Proof of Learning Beyond the Test
  • Strength-Based Personalization

Experience39: Friday, April 28th, 2017 @Design39Campus 8:00am – 2:00pm

Experience39 builds from and expands on the Tour39 experience.  The goal of Experience39 is for you to experience first-hand from the educators who designed the lessons observed on Tour39.  LED’s will be facilitating deep dive workshops based on the classroom visits centered around Human-Centered Design Thinking, STEAM-Based Experiences, Proof of Learning, and Strength-Based Personalization. You will have an opportunity to select two deep dive sessions and come away with lessons to bring to their classrooms and schools.

Human-Centered Design Thinking

Are you looking for a way to blend the Common Core standards with the Deeper Learning Skills you know kids need today? The Design Thinking Process allows students to practice content skills while growing their collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity skills. Join us on Thursday to experience the Design Thinking Process with students through an integrated humanities and STEM challenge. On Friday, tools, scaffolds and project ideas will be provided for you to take directly back to the classroom.

STEAM-Based Experiences in the Makery

Whether you have a dedicated makery at your school or are trying to incorporate maker mindsets in your classroom, this deep dive with give you the foundation you need to support students in STEAM and beyond. In Thursday’s session you will see makeries in use for various STEAM projects. On Friday you will dig in deeper to determine how you might build the space and build the mindset in the teachers and students who will use the space.

Proof of Learning Beyond the Test

Wondering how to incorporate technology in a meaningful way? Trying to support students as they follow a personalized learning pathway? This session will show how students and teachers can work together to co-create learning paths and provide proof of their learning.  After watching this in action on Thursday, you’ll leave with concrete tools, strategies and examples on Friday.

Strength-Based Personalization

As our education system shifts toward being learner-centered, we need the tools to find and build on student’s strengths. How might we build projects, lessons and groups using student’s superpowers? On Thursday you will see these tools and groupings live with students. Friday’s session will focus on ideas for  bringing this back to your setting and students.
